Alex & Serg Arguing (Again!)

From the Series: Life on Dog Hill

Anyone with twins in their family can count on a couple of givens, hands down (no pun intended):

Constant arguing
Ceaseless competition

“Why, oh why, oh why?” I repeatedly ask my twins sons, now seventeen. “Why do you have to argue all the time?”

Their response, it seems, always ends up in another argument and it’s always the other one’s fault. Always.

“He started it.”

“No, I didn’t. He’s the one who…”

Really now. Sound familiar to all you twin-loving people out there?

The only thing that compares to the misery their constant bickering brings is the frustration I feel with their constant need to one-up each other. Usually, the one-ups are really one-downs; or, as I have termed it: “destructive criticism.”

“Good job playing bench tonight at the game,” says one to the other.

“Not as good as the job you did not scoring when you should have,” comes the retort.

And that goes on and on and on.

Being their mom, I try to help them see the err of their ways. “As twin brothers, you should be each other’s best friend,” I often say. “You should be lifting each other up, not tearing each other down.”

They look at me as if I just dropped off a spaceship from Mars.

“Really, mom. That’s just so lame.”

Obviously, the ability for rational thinking is still formulating in their twin brains.

This twin-styled communication has become a part of our family background noise. I’ve learned to tune in and tune out throughout the day. You know, checking in to monitor explosion levels and then checking out again. You’ll see what I mean if you watch this three-minute clip that I’ve titled: Twins Arguing (Again!)

Enjoy!
