Hubby and I had the honor of joining the Stammtisch at our favorite Hotel Spitzweg in Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

From the series: Life on Dog Hill

This time a year ago, hubby and I were finalizing our two-week getaway — a visit to Germany followed by a seven day romantic cruise on the Danube. It was one of our most memorable vacations.

What made it so good? Aside from the European ambiance of cities like Munich, Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest I must say it was because it was just the two of us. No kids, no family reunions… just me and my best friend and love.

Hubby was disappointed the Vienna sewer tour was closed for the winter. He really wanted to reenact the famous scenes from the 1949 movie “The Third Man.”

Preparing for a two-week getaway when you still have three kids in school is no easy thing. We convinced (twisted the arm of) my mom to fly up and “manage” the chaos. Poor thing. She hasn’t been back since… Nevertheless, she accomplished the task of insuring that all the kids were alive when we returned and that they did, in fact, go to school during our absence. That’s what we call success.

On our end, we had the times of our lives eating, drinking and being merry. Every day. Smile.

The river cruise ship we shared with 120 other passengers was just the right size for us. The cities we visited were both famous and quaint. Everywhere I looked was a photograph waiting to be taken.  It’s a holiday I could repeat again and again and again.

Just me and hubby…
