As a life coach, I work with lots of different people on a variety of topics. But one issue that everyone seems to struggle with (myself included) is self-love. There are lots of signs that indicate lack of love and respect for oneself such as looking for validation from your boss, giving away your time and energy without ever receiving anything in return and negative self-talk.

While most people want to please others, it can become a losing battle when you allow your perceptions of “what others think” to shape who you are, what you do and how you behave. You’ll feel more authentic if you search for the spark of your own divine and learn to better love yourself.

In this podcast, you will learn why it’s important to know what kind of life you want to live and to commit to living authentically. You’ll also learn some of the symptoms of not loving yourself and how to love yourself more.

Three steps to deepen the mind/body/spirit connection

As humans, you have a physical mind/body presence and a spiritual presence. Both are in the physical reality, but the spiritual presence is also in the subconscious. In this sense, you stand with one foot in the physical world and one foot in the spiritual world, whether you are aware of it or not. Mindfully working to balance the complex dichotomy of your physical/spiritual self helps you to better understand and respond to real-world challenges.

This is especially important to consider when you feel like things aren’t happening for you quickly enough. Often times your mind has a desire that the spiritual self knows you are not yet ready to experience. When this happens, you can lessen the frustration by keeping the physical mind/body and nonphysical spirit better connected so that you feel more satisfaction.

Three steps to deepen your physical/non-physical connection

1. Eliminate negative self-talk. For example, you are interviewing for a job that means a promotion and more money but you walk away feeling like you flubbed up the interview. Don’t beat yourself up about it! Words like, “I’m so stupid, I can’t believe I screwed that interview,” crushes both your mental and spiritual sense of being. Instead, understand that what you gave in that interview was the best you could give at that time! Accept that what you perceive and what the listener perceives are two different realities. You really can’t predict what the interviewer’s perception of you is without asking. Finally, if you don’t get the job, know that it was not the best thing for you at this time in your life – no matter what you may think. As the adage goes, hindsight is 20/20 and while our physical self may not have a 360-degree perspective on past, present and future, our spiritual presence does. Trust it!

2. Make YOU time. If you have a job, chances are you spend the majority of your time working. And, if you have a job and a family; well, chances are you don’t have very much YOU time. That’s why it’s so important to be deliberate in carving time out of each day to recognize what you contribute and how hard you work to make a difference in the world. Here are just a few ways to deepen your mind/body/spirit connection.

• Get up ten minutes earlier and drink your coffee or tea on the patio. Listen to the birds sing, watch the sun come up over the horizon. Don’t allow yourself to think about work or anything stressful.
• When driving to work, turn off your phone and radio and make this your meditative time. Start with gratitudes!
• Take a break at work and walk around the block without your phone, blackberry or iPad. Think about how well-intentioned you are and how wonderful you feel to be alive.
• Stop by the bookstore or library once a week and browse your favorite section. Grab a book on meditation and read up on the benefits to both your health and your happiness.
• Exercise! Whether walking on the treadmill or working with a trainer, exercise benefits your mind, body and spirit. And, with a headset playing meditative music, it can be therapeutic as well.

3. Plan and expect health and happiness. What you think, you believe. And what you believe, becomes reality. So plan for and expect all the things you want, beginning with health and happiness. A great method for achieving this is through a process called segment intending. Consider that every part of your life is in segments. For example, from the time you wake up until you get out of bed to start your day is a segment. From the time you get out of bed to eat breakfast until you leave for work is another segment. From the time you get in your car to drive to work until you arrive is another segment – and so on. You can use these segments to plan your daily expectations. In other words, when you wake up in the morning, imagine how you want your morning to go as you prepare for work. Imagine it going smoothly, with no bumps. As you move into that segment, notice how it feels and how you have paved the way for ease and flow. When you’re in that segment, think ahead to the next. Imagine your drive to work and how you will have green lights and will hear your favorite song on the radio. Imagine how motivated you will feel by the time you get to work. Continue to create the day you wish to live prior to moving to the next segments. Break it down in a way that makes sense to you whether it’s by meetings, projects or by the hour. What’s important is that you are deciding what you want each day to bring and by your pure thought, you are setting in motion the manifestation of your desires.

Deepening the mind, body and spirit connection is really about slowing down from the chaos of your day-to-day physical world and allowing yourself to be mindfully in the moment. The best part is that it doesn’t take much time and the benefits can be felt immediately!
